I have fond memories
of going to the
strawberry patch with my mom as a child, so thank you for the
timely and yummy recipes in the May issue. I will be keeping them
for future strawberry seasons and to make with my daughter.

I
liked th e id ea
of the “Beach
Rook Swap” in the June issue’s
“Staycation Summer” article. I’d also
suggest supporting used-book sales
that are held by many library booster
clubs. Thanks for a top-notch
magazine with practical ideas.
Sue Nan Hartley, Millington, TN
Great idea
,
Sue. Be sure to check out
our new Calendar on page 12 of this
issue for a month's worth of good
reading ideas.
Oops!
Veteran clothesline users
must have gasped when they saw the
T-shirts hanging from the shoulders
in the June issue’s “On The Line/
Living Green” article. Hangingshirts
from the bottom hem eliminates
clothespin marks at the shoulder.

Thanks
,
Judith. We received many
similar letters from fellow veteran
line-dryers. Staff involved have been
assigned ironing duties until the first
hard frost.

would love
BHG as much as I do. Always a
mainstay on my grandmother’s end
tables, it is not the old-fashioned
magazine I once assumed it was.
BHG inspires me to keep reaching
for many of my daily goals: squeezing
more out of our house and, increas-
ingly, our yard; striving to be healthy
inside and out; feeling pampered and
put-together.

I ’ve b e e n e x p e rim e n tin g with
plants for many years to determine
what deer will or won’t eat. Your
advice in the May issue’s “Oh, Deer”
was right-on. I have also had success
with the fertilizer Milorganite in
repelling deer and other critters
from my flower gardens (do not use
on food plants). It works well enough
for me to have hostas and tulips,
which deer love to eat!

I
saw
the cover of the
May issue picturing the Fresh
Strawberry Bars, I knew I wanted to
make them for the Moms group I
belong to. We had recently been
strawberry picking together, so the
timing was perfect. The bars were a
big success, and I got many requests
for the recipe.

I m a d e your Strawberry Meringue
Pie on Mother’s Day for my mother
in-law. It was so easy to make and a
huge hit. We had to stop my father
in-law from eating a third slice!
PS: I’m a novice baker.

N ev er h av in g a g ard en
before,
the “Home Grown” feature about
building a raised garden bed in the
April issue gave us just the place to
start. We took the magazine straight
to the hardware store and bought the
lumber and supplies. Thanks for
helping our family save money on
healthy vegetables this summer.

Y our 10 To T ty
page on popcorn
toppings in the March issue had
quite an impact on our campus at
Colgate University. I chair a group
connected with the Wellness
Initiative, and we held a Pop-in
Study Break at the main library with
17 types of toppings and an incred-
ible amount of popcorn from a local
movie theater. About 350 students
particpated—a remarkable number
for any event, but spectacular for one
about healthy snacks.
